home:bodies

In the spirit of envisioning the future of housing, home:bodies reimagines the home as an active character in the act of inhabitation. The project brings fun and play not only into the walls of the home, but into the very interactions between the installation and its inhabitants. Constructed from soft “deadstock” fabric, a flexible steel structure, and hanging glass and ceramic artifacts, the installation itself invites—and perhaps even demands—play. 

The soft, textured fabric walls distort with touch, collapsing the boundaries between those inside and outside while filtering light, shadow and wind through the structure. Black glass handles and ceramic cowbells, suspended from the flexible building skin, further change the traditional shape of the house while inviting inhabitants to play and, in turn, reshape the form of the home and the sounds within it. 

As with the broader ethos of Tyler School of Art and Architecture, home:bodies challenges preconceptions through a broad, multidisciplinary vantage point—allowing the work to transcend any single discipline, tool, or methodology. It draws inspiration and expertise from numerous fields, including architecture, sculpture, glass, ceramics, and materials studies. 

The project was conceived and crafted by Andrew John Wit (Chair, Professor of Architecture) and Laurin Aman (Assistant Professor of Architecture) with interactive pieces designed by Jessica Jane Julius (Program Head, Associate Professor of Glass), and George Rodriquez (Assistant Professor of Ceramics).  

home:bodies will debut on Thursday, October 1 from 6-9 p.m. in the Village of Industry & Art (VIA) courtyard.
